SPIRIT NYS was first established in Rochester, NY in September 2021 with 22 homeless students at Franklin High School making commitments toward graduating high school. Soon after, Edison Tech and Northeast College Preparatory High School became our partners with an additional 17 students from those schools. SPIRIT’s first year provided stunning results with increases in grades and decreases in the number of dropouts. Our first graduating class in 2022 included 19 students. Two won college scholarships and three won prestigious awards. Please follow us as we continue to expand in the Rochester area and beyond. Our Blog posts will provide updates on graduation numbers.
The commitment of school personnel to SPIRIT NYS is essential to our students’ success. Program coordinators mentor and advocate for students through regularly scheduled and emergency meetings as needed to support progress toward graduation. Coordinators help students cope with circumstances outside their control and address obstacles within their control. SPIRIT also helps our students define their goals for after high school graduation and provide guidance with the college application process, or pursuing further vocational training, as needed to accomplish their goals. High school graduation is a major accomplishment, but for many it is merely the beginning.
